Recuva recovered 68% of our usable test files. It performed reasonably well on recently deleted data from the healthy NTFS partition, especially when the original records had not been overwritten.
Results dropped sharply after formatting or structural damage. Recuva lacks the broader reconstruction tools found in Disk Drill, R-Studio, or DMDE. Still, its free edition has no recovery-size cap, making it worth trying for a deleted document or a recently emptied Recycle Bin.

We created a 12 GB set containing 1,146 files across photos, Office documents, PDFs, ZIP archives, audio, plus short video clips. Copies were placed on a 256 GB NTFS SSD plus a 128 GB exFAT USB drive. We tested recent deletion, a quick format, plus a damaged partition table from a Windows 11 desktop.
Each tool scanned an unchanged image of the source media. A file counted as usable only if it opened correctly or passed a checksum comparison where the original was available. We also scored previews, folder preservation, scan control, imaging, pricing clarity, plus the risk of a new user choosing an unsafe action.
For a recently deleted file on a healthy drive, start with a free option. Formatting, lost partitions, RAW volumes, or missing drive letters call for stronger file-system reconstruction. Disk Drill is easier to navigate, while R-Studio or DMDE exposes more control over partitions, scan regions, plus storage structures.
Check the preview before paying. A filename alone proves little. Open several photos, documents, plus videos from different folders. If previews are corrupt, buying a license will not magically repair overwritten or fragmented data.
Do not install recovery software on the drive that lost the files. Do not restore files to that same drive either. Both actions can overwrite deleted content that still exists in unallocated space. Use another computer when the Windows system drive is involved, or connect the affected disk as secondary storage.
A slow or unstable disk should be imaged before scanning. Repeated deep scans create extra reads, which is a poor gamble if the hardware is deteriorating. Clicking, grinding, frequent disconnects, or a wrong reported capacity are reasons to stop DIY work.
Disk Drill earned first place because it found the most usable files in our test while keeping previews, filters, imaging, plus recovery steps approachable. R-Studio is the stronger fit for detailed manual work, while DMDE delivers remarkable capability for $20.
PhotoRec is the free fallback for raw carving. Recuva makes sense only for straightforward deletion from a healthy drive. Your storage condition matters more than a small score difference, so match the tool to the failure before buying.
Scan first, preview several important files, open any free sample recoveries, then save the final output to a separate physical drive.
